La Diada 9/11

September 11th has held an important place in Catalan hearts as La Diada, the Catalan Independence Day, marking the occasion of the seige of Barcelona that led to the suppression of Catalan identity for hundreds of years.  La Diada is now celebrated with the Estelada flag (of Catalan independence from Spain), small music festivals, and HUGE outdoor paella cookouts.

While Catalan independence has been a staple in BCN since the end of the Franco regime, most Catalans will admit that Catalunya is best when connected to Spain as an “autonomous community” as it is now, acting much like one of the states in the US, with its own governance but still truly a part of Spain.
