Lucerne, our second stop in Switzerland, is the quintessential Swiss city – sitting on a lake and surrounded by mountains (you should start to see the pattern emerging…).  Lucerne’s wooden bridge, a symbol of the city, dates from the 1300s when it was used by the military to quickly cross the lake outflow canal.  A highlight from Lucerne was the ascent to the top of Mt. Pilatus, a 7,000 foot peak that dominates the region and provides great vistas over Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps.
